Writing Goals for 2020

I realize I’ve dedicated and rededicated myself to…well, myself and my writing a few times. Each time I lose sight of my hopes or passion or dreams and everything goes dark. It’s like dieting. I fall off the bandwagon and decide “well screw up, I might as well stay off.”

The thing is I’ve completed one dream: I published a novella. Was it my best work? Of course it was! At the time, that is. Every time I write, I improve. My next story will be even better.

I have two complete rough drafts and one 2/3 complete rough draft of fantasy stories. My self-imposed goal this year is to complete the rewrite phase of all three stories so that I have complete stories to edit and restructure next year.

I will also continue this blog. I may be the only reader currently, but for now that’s enough. It is important I have these tidbits of brainpower stored in electronic format for my future perusal. Someday I’ll say something witty, and you’ll praise me for it. Someday I’ll post a link to my next book. Someday you’ll email me and say you can’t wait for the next book in the series (I do have a series idea but it’s taking a back burner while I complete the edits of my other stories).

There is no right or wrong way to write. Though I suppose if I had to choose one wrong way it would be failure to write. A painter isn’t a painter without a colorful canvas full of his imagination. As such, if I don’t get off my butt and do this writing thing, I cannot call myself an author.

Kids don’t raise themselves (unless you suck as a parent).

Meals don’t prepare themselves (but this would be great since I can’t cook anything that isn’t charred).

Books don’t write themselves (well mine do, but that’s beside the point).

I have dreams. To reach them, I must act. So I act I shall.
