Picking a Niche

If you want to be a published author, get off your butt and do it. There’s no magic wand. There’s no perfect time. Just write. I suck at this advice, but I’m trying…again.

I’m supposed to pick a niche. I’m thinking single parents who have a passion for being creative but can’t find the time to do anything other than keep their miniature humans alive. That sounds about like what I can relate to and talk about.

If you want to be a published author, get off your butt and do it. There’s no magic wand. There’s no perfect time. Just write. I suck at this advice, but I’m trying…again.

Don’t sell yourself short. If you have a passion to tell a story, write a poem, or journal an interview about an important topic, then do it.

If I’ve learned anything about life it’s that nothing will line up in your favor. You have to decide you want something and then DO IT.

I’m a single mom with a great support structure of friends and family. I work long hours as a nurse. I don’t watch TV. (Not sure this is by choice as my son likes watching TV, and we currently share a room. So it’s watch Disney Junior or not.) I read the occasional book – I’m very picky about author because I hate wasting time on reading crap. I love playing role-playing games such as D&D. I love playing console games and World of Warcraft. Oh, and to top it all off, I purchased a house to remodel for my son and I to live in. Still, there must be time for me to write. Even if I choose thirty minutes a day. Even if I jabber on in this blog. I’m writing.

So my advice today is: If you have a dream, live it. Right now. Don’t wait.

  1. I agree with you 100%! I feel that if you have something inside that you want to share…then go for it! Start writing….you just never know where it may take you!!

  2. Totally agree with you. You can think, dream, and plan all you want about being a writer or whatever but until you actually take steps towards it, it’ll only ever be in your head.

  3. Great post! I read somewhere once that if you want to be a writer make sure you write at least 200 words a day, even if they’re crappy. That advice has served me well. I look forward to reading more of your blog!
